The Serenade is a popular poetic composition with a predominant amorous character. The Serenade is conceived as a simple vocal melody, or accompanied by popular instruments, generally guitar, mandolin and theorbo. It usually has a “popular-sentimental” spirit and it is sung as a homage underneath the windows of the beloved woman. It was already known by the Troubadours in the Middle Ages. The most exquisite example of instrumental serenades were composed by Mozart, Haydin, Beethoven, Brahms and more recently by Strauss, Roussel, Schoenberg, Stravinskij and Petrassi. The ‘Serenades’ from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, Rossini’s “Barbiere di Siviglia” and Mascagni’s ouverture of “Cavalleria Rusticana” are among the most famous. Renowned also the ‘Serenade’ “Eine kleine Nachtmusic K 525” by Mozart. This cd finds out the strong and authentic popular vocation of the typical Roman serenade.
