If it is true that lounge music more than any other musical genre has definitively shattered musical and cultural boundaries creating unbelievable contaminations, “Chillounge sin fronteras” by Ensemble Ethnique is a clear and successful demonstration. Here are some of the tracks in details: L’ISTANTE is the opening title of this extraordinary album and it’s an hommage to the love poetry of the turkish poet Nazim Hikmet. The predominant sounds are those warm of the Mediterrean Sea as in many other songs by Ensemble Ethnique. The rhythm in ‘L’ISTANTE’ is scanned by the “darbuka” a characteristic egyptian instrument, very common even in Turky and Morocco, which joins the sound of “oud” a typical turkish chord intrument. It’s thanks to an in-depth musical research by the author during a journey in Turkey that he has found the inspiration for the rhythmic and harmonic basis of this singular song. L’ISTANTE begins with middle-oriental rhythmics then unexpectedly the voice of the baritone Maximus sings a melody with verses with the antique flavour of the 1800 ‘romanza’. The opera melody surprisingly harmonizes with the middle-oriental tones in spite of the distant origins of these two music worlds. L’ISTANTE is undoubtely a successful attempt to break the rules and is worth an attentive listening. BOSSA LOUNGE: Again in this song the author mixes two music genres that are geographically and culturally very far from each other. In fact the basic rhythmic is a classic south american bossanova, while the melody is sung by fascinating oriental voices. It is indeed difficult to describe the enchanting outcome of this mixture. The star in LLORO NEGRO is the magic of a trumpet repeating the loop of the same melody and every time conveying athmospheres and flavours of different exotic places. It is probably the most radiophonic title in the album. KASBHA’S COLORS: It’s an incredibly evocative and descriptive song. It communicates the sensation of perceiving characteristic Kasbah’s colours, suonds, excitement and smells! SPONDE: A chant from Salento (region of Southern Italy) lively leaves the Italian coast to meet with the odd rhytmycs and sounds from the opposite Macedonian coast and Balkan gipsy culture. The voice of Zoe sings an excerpt from ‘S. Paulu II’ a traditional healing song from Salento by an anonymous author.
