Urban Chill is an album that fully conveys the idea of “contamination”. It is indeed difficult to place it in a specific music category; “Chill out” is the new term that gets closer to the music world represented by Urban Chill. Among the many different influences making up this project, two are the main recurring elements: Funky and Jazz. The first one is represented by the rhythmic choices, sampled in most cases; the second one by the atmospheres, themes and especially the live-played instruments. The inspiration results from a long and attentive research conducted among records of legendary names in music history as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ron Carter…, and the fresh creativity of Urban Chill, nourished by the era of electronics and samplers. The clever, naive and unprejudiced use of all these ingredients made by the two young artists has nevertheless required the precious collaboration of experienced jazz artists: Gianni Savelli’s sax and Claudio Corvini’s trumpet draw Urban Chill nearer to a music world otherwise cronologically far from them. More features carachterize this album, such as cultural and linguistic contaminations from different countries, expressed in tracks like ‘New Beginning’ that brings out the daily uneasiness of an individual living in a cosmopolitan metropolis when discomfort turns into reflection, anger and desire to start again; or in ‘Almost the Same’ in which two jewish teenagers talk of their intriguing experiences. Even French, actually the language of a new jazzy stream, is extensively used. Marco Fullone adds his precious touch taking care of the sequencing and mixing. Urban Chill is a fascinating “melting pot” rich of flavours, from those traditional and cultivated of jazz, to the groovy ones of urban funky.
